Lighthouses
· The Absecon Lighthouse at Rhode Island and Pacific Avenues in Atlantic City is a historic structure designed by Civil War General George Meade and built in 1857. Visitors who climb the 228-step structure are rewarded with a bird’s eye view of Atlantic City’s dazzling skyline and the back bay area. A photographer’s delight, the lighthouse re-opened to the public in early 1999. It is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey. The Lighthouse is open September to June: Thursday through Monday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from July to August: seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge for visiting the ground floor museum and gift shop. · The Cape May Point Lighthouse goes back to 1859, with 199 steps to climb. At the top is a panoramic view in the Watch Room Gallery. (609) 884-8656
· The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood was built in 1874 and showcases memorabilia, antiques and a functioning light. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Summer hours are seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults and $1 for children.
